Your Nagging EV Questions, Answered!

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) are the next frontier of vehicular travel. As the world tries to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels in a bid to lessen carbon emissions and arrest runaway climate change, zero-emission electric vehicles have been crowned as the successor of the century-old internal combustion engine. However, since EVs are relatively new to the mainstream, most people don’t know a lot about them. In this article, we will answer some of the most common EV questions and try to give you a better understanding of this game-changing technology.

When was the first EV made?

While a lot of people tend to assume that Tesla invented electric vehicles, the American EV maker was responsible for making EVs more mainstream, but not creating them. The first electric vehicle was built in the 1830s by Robert Anderson, a Scottish inventor who developed an electric carriage with a nonrechargeable battery. In the 1890s, fellow Scottish inventor William Morrison brought the technology to the United States after he equipped a four-wheel, horse-drawn carriage with a super-efficient, power-storage battery.

What is a hybrid electric vehicle (“HEV”)?

A hybrid is a vehicle that has both an internal combustion engine (“ICE”), a battery and an electric motor. They were precursors to the electric vehicles of today, with the Toyota Prius being one of the most well-known hybrids.

Are electric vehicles better for the environment?

Yes, but to an extent. Since they do not have an ICE, EVs do not produce any emissions. However, hybrids do produce carbon emissions due to their internal combustion engines. Additionally, EV batteries use rare metals such as cobalt and lithium, and many experts agree that mining these minerals can have an environmental impact. Dead EV batteries can also pollute the environment if they are not recycled or disposed of correctly.

How do you charge an EV, and how long would it take to fully charge one?

Like your cell phone or your laptop, you will have to plug your EV into an outlet to charge its battery. However, the speed with which it charges will depend on your car and the kind of charger you use. A standard Level 1 charger, or just an ordinary house outlet, would add around five miles of range per hour. A Level 2 charger is faster, adding about 35 miles of range or more per hour. You can have such a charger installed at your home, and similar ones are found at most public charging stations.

The fastest chargers are Level 3, or DC fast chargers, and they can add up to 250 miles of range per hour. However, there aren’t a lot of public DC fast chargers outside of select cities, and not every EV model will be compatible with a Level 3 charger.

Why are electric vehicles so expensive?

The high cost of EVs is due to their onboard lithium-ion batteries. They are usually made using rare and expensive metals, including lithium and cobalt, and EV makers tend to pass these costs down to the consumers. Fortunately, producing EVs and their batteries is gradually becoming cheaper, and experts predict that EVs will be as cheap to produce as gas and diesel-powered vehicles by the end of the decade.

With the emergence of EV makers such as ev Transportation Services Inc., there will soon be an electric vehicle for every motorist and application as the cost of manufacturing battery packs goes down.
