Universal EV Charging Set to Be Launched Next Year

Electric vehicle drivers across most major markets are set to say goodbye to EV app folders and time-draining pre-charging procedures thanks to the introduction of a new universal electric vehicle charging set. Launching in 2025, the universal charging set has the support of most of the auto industry’s top EV makers as well as the world’s preeminent charging networks.

It would allow EV drivers to pull into nearly any EV charging station, plug into any charger, and recharge their cars as easily as a conventional gas-powered car can fill up at any station. This will be a major game changer for the nascent electric vehicle industry, providing EV drivers with the freedom to charge their cars at virtually any charging station and alleviating the range anxiety that prevents so many drivers from switching to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The average electric vehicle charging experience can range from quick and easy to time-consuming and frustrating. EV drivers often need various things to be working correctly before they can even plug in their cars, such as the charging network’s app, credit card reader, a functional touchscreen, and the charger itself. If any of these components is faulty or fails outright, drivers can spend hours waiting for their turn at the few remaining functional chargers.

In comparison, an internal combustion engine (ICE) driver only needs cash, a debit or credit card to refill their vehicle. The new universal “Plug and Charge” set could work as an equalizer that makes EV charging as easy and convenient as refilling a gas-powered car. An SAE International initiative that’s set to launch early next year, the system allows drivers to charge their EVs while they use a cloud connection to make payments.

The so-called ‘plug-and-charge movement’ encompasses most automakers and EV firms, including Tesla, which already provided a similar experience and will be available to the majority of EV brands at most, if not all, charging stations. With several major players signing on, the Electric Vehicle Public Key Infrastructure (EVPKI) is building on the ISO charging standard to secure authentication and authorization for charging and make it even faster.

In addition to making EV charging a lot less complicated, the new plug-and-charge system initiative could aid the proliferation of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that allows EVs to discharge their energy back into the grid and help increase their resilience to shocks. A statement from Joint Office of Energy & Transportation executive director Gabe Klein, the plug and charge technology will be instrumental in reaching the industry’s bidirectional charging goals and help it achieve ‘true vehicle-to-grid integration’.

As this universal charging system becomes the norm in the EV industry, various manufacturers like Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) could see their sales ticking up. This is because buyers will be less wary about charging issues.
