As the world looks toward a future free of carbon emissions, it has become increasingly clear that the transportation sector needs a major overhaul. The sector is responsible for a significant proportion of greenhouse gases produced worldwide, and plenty of countries have vowed to replace fossil-fuel-powered vehicles with battery-powered electric vehicles (“EVs”) over the next decade. Just barely a decade old, the EV industry has been consistently working on improving battery technology to make the vehicles more efficient, to lower costs, and to increase battery life.
Presently, EV batteries deteriorate and lose their range over time, with the rate of range-loss determined by a variety of factors, including driving habits, temperatures, vehicle load and topography. In the recent past, battery makers have debuted new battery technology that uses carbon electrodes to increase EV battery performance. Power Japan Plus revealed a new battery technology dubbed Ryden dual carbon that uses carbon materials that last longer and charge 20 times faster than lithium.
NAWA Technologies has also introduced a Vertically Aligned Carbon nanotube (VACNT) electrode for batteries that is expected to increase battery capacities by a factor of up to three and reduce charging time to minutes instead of hours. “NAWA’s Ultra-Fast Carbon Electrode will allow people to charge batteries faster, go further and for longer, and all with a product based on one of the world’s most abundant and green materials, carbon,” says NAWA Technologies CEO Ulrik Grape.
CNTs are covalently bonded carbon atoms that consist of rolled-up sheets of single-layer graphene. Carbon nanotubes, or CNTs, have 400 times the mechanical strength of steel and have superior thermal conductivity compared to diamonds. NAWA’s VACNTs have an arrangement of 100 billion nanotubes per cm squared, granting them the highest ionic conductivity with the highest electrical and thermal conductivity.
Because of this, the firm dubbed the technology “one of the fastest electrodes for batteries in the world,” stating that the technology will bring revolutionary improvements in power, energy, life cycle and charging time. Thanks to the revolutionary nano-sized 3D designs, “batteries are no longer limited by power-based systems.” The result is an electrode that has high electrical and ionic conduction and can charge and discharge faster than most lithium-ion batteries, greatly increasing the performance of EV batteries.
“Since the beginning of the battery industry, most performance increases have come from materials, but it has reached a plateau today,” says NAWA Technologies’ founder, chairman of the board, CTO and COO Pascal Boulanger. “Combine abundant carbon with nanoscale electrode architecture advances, and you have a game changer.”
