San Diego Manufacturer Starts Taking Orders for EV That Doesn’t Need Charging

Back in 2011, San Diego automotive startup Aptera announced that it wouldn’t be able to produce any vehicles until it got sufficient funding. The firm had been seeking government funding to accelerate the production of its three-wheeled, eco-friendly prototypes, but it was held back by miles of red tape. Close to a decade later, Aptera is back in the game, offering an innovative electric vehicle that could forever change the fledgling electric vehicle (“EV”) industry.

Aptera has announced the introduction of the first solar electric vehicle in the industry that can be recharged with only solar energy; the car has a range of up to 1,000 miles on a full charge. The vehicle features a novel, futuristic design that makes it a lot more aerodynamic than other EVs. Curvy and lightweight, the two-person, three-wheeler is shaped like an airplane fuselage without the wings and is made from a light material that’s stronger than steel.

The curvy, aerodynamic design coupled with the lightweight structure gives Aptera’s three-wheeler a drag coefficient of only 0.13, allowing it to slice through the air with much less resistance. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 has a drag coefficient of 0.23 while Volkswagen’s ID 4 electric SUV has a drag coefficient of 0.28.

Aptera will offer the novel electric vehicle in four different capacities: 25kWh, 40kWh, 60kWh, and 100kWh; the 100kWh battery pack offers up to 1,609 miles of range. The three-wheel drive model takes 3.5 seconds to get from zero to 60 miles while the front-wheel-drive model takes 5.5 seconds.

The vehicles will have a solar panel array of about three square meters embedded into the surface, which can add around 40 miles of range on a relatively sunny day. An additional 24 miles of range can be achieved by adding solar panels to the hood and hatch. However, note that the sun can’t provide enough juice for the vehicle to operate in real time while you drive. According to Aptera, the solar panels can charge the EV at around five miles of range per hour when parked. When plugged in, the charge rate can hit up to 500 miles of range per hour.

There are two versions of the vehicle — Paradigm, and Paradigm+ —  and the firm is now taking orders for its two-person EV with a refundable $100 deposit. Depending on the options, prices will range from $25,900 to more than $46,000.

Other EV manufacturers are also doing their part to meet the evolving needs of vehicle owners. For example, ev Transportation Services Inc. has a lightweight utility EV perfect for security, parking enforcement, grounds and property maintenance, among other applications.
