EV Industry Awaits Musk’s Role in Influencing US EV Policy

As the Biden administration prepares to hand over to the new regime, the EV sector is waiting to see how Tesla CEO Elon Musk will affect American electric vehicle policy. Despite Donald Trump's outspoken criticism of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), Musk endorsed the GOP Presidential candidate and reportedly spent more than $100 million on the Trump campaign, in addition to appearing at several of his rallies. Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris will likely propel Musk into the corridors of power and put him in a position of significant influence, particularly regarding EV policies. His controversial decision to support…

Bentley Sets Target to Be Fully Electric by 2035

Bentley has revealed that it wants to become a fully electric brand by 2035, postponing its original plan to electrify its entire vehicle line-up by 2030. The luxury brand first announced the plan to become an all-electric brand in late 2020 as part of the ‘Beyond100’ strategy but it recently unveiled a revised ‘Beyond100+’ strategy with 2035 as the new target. When Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser presented the revised strategy, he described Beyond100+ as the luxury automaker’s ‘guiding light’ as it pushes its electrification target from 2030 to 2035, maintains its goal of a carbon-free future, and reinforces its position…

UK EV Sales Mount Despite Drop in Overall Vehicle Sales

Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that electric vehicle sales in the United Kingdom (UK) have risen despite an overall drop in vehicle sales. The lobby Group’s data shows that EV sales were up in October as automakers sold 29,800 cars while petrol and diesel vehicle sales dropped by 14% and 25%, respectively. Electric vehicle sales also increased by a quarter in October compared to October 2023 amidst efforts by carmakers to meet government emission standards, SMMT data shows. On the other hand, overall vehicle sales in October fell by 6% year-over-year, with diesel-powered…

Researchers Develop New Transmission for Commercial EVs

University of Kassel researchers have developed a new transmission for commercial electric vehicles that could help carmakers manufacture electric cars geared for the delivery sector. The German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) provided $1.9 million in funding for the project with the Kassel-based Daimler Truck facility and the University of Kassel focusing on the project's execution. Although several automakers are already manufacturing electric delivery vehicles, the University of Kassel posits that automakers have had a difficult time introducing EVs to the delivery sector as there are no electric cars that are technically suited for the role. Existing electric…

What Tesla Could Lose or Gain if Trump Becomes US President

The ongoing U.S. elections could be a turning point for American electric vehicle firm Tesla and its controversial CEO Elon Musk. The billionaire has thrown his support behind presidential candidate Donald Trump and has reportedly spent more than a million dollars on Trump’s campaign. With Trump reversing his previously antagonistic stance on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in light of Musk's endorsement, the assumption is that a second Trump presidency would be beneficial to Tesla. However, the situation is a lot more complicated than that. A Trump administration would probably do its best to lower federal electric vehicle purchases, a decision…

The EU and China Agree to Hold Talks Over Looming EV Tariffs

China and the European Union have agreed to hold further talks as the deadline for implementing steep import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles looms. The EU first implemented the tariffs several months ago after cheap Chinese EVs began flooding into the regional bloc and the European Commission launched a probe into Beijing's electric vehicle subsidy program. The investigation found that China had given its automotive sector an unfair advantage by pumping tens of billions’ worth of subsidies into the sector for over a decade. The subsidy program allowed Chinese carmakers to manufacture EVs at low cost and sell them cheaply,…

Costco Ventures into EV Charging

American multinational corporation Costco is venturing into the burgeoning battery electric vehicle (BEV) charging market. With the retailer running over 500 stores in the U.S. and 140 stores in the American EV capital, California, Costco could potentially serve thousands of electric vehicle drivers across the country. Costco recently installed its first branded electric vehicle DC fast chargers in its home state of Washington, in a Ridgefield-based warehouse store. The Costco-branded fast chargers were manufactured by a startup from Seattle called Electric Era and they feature a unique design that uses built-in batteries. The move represents Costco's first cautious foray back…

Data Shows Electric Truck, Car Fleet Owners Save 9% on Their Operating Costs

Recent analysis of fleet total cost of ownership (TCO) has revealed that electric trucks and cars are saving fleet owners 9% on operational costs. Using a tool built by the Electronification Coalition and the Dashboard for Rapid Vehicle Electrification, RMI analyzed data from various scenarios and found that the TCO of fleet EVs is lower compared to equivalent gas-powered cars, even with the inclusion of charging infrastructure costs. Although the analysis only included the U.S. federal tax incentive for EV purchases, several states also have their own EV and charging incentives and subsidies that can be stacked on top of…

Automotive Giants Unveil a Bevy of Affordable EVs to Counter China’s Models

Several large European automakers unveiled a bevy of affordable electric cars during the recent Paris Motor Show to counter the flood of cheap electric cars coming out of China. With electric vehicle demand waning in recent months partly due to high purchase costs, some of Europe's most dominant carmakers are looking to boost demand and recapture the market they lost to Chinese brands. The East Asian nation solved the electric vehicle affordability problem through a mix of industrial policies and tens of billions of dollars in subsidies that allowed Chinese carmakers to lower their EV manufacturing costs and pass on…

Innovative Transistors Hold the Potential to Enable Fast-Charging for EVs

Drivers may have access to fast-charging battery electric vehicles that can charge from ordinary power outlets in the near future, thanks to innovative transistors. EV charging still represents one of the largest barriers to electric vehicle adoption due to the extended charging periods associated with standard EV chargers. For electric vehicles to enjoy mass adoption, they should be able to recharge as quickly and conveniently as gas-powered cars. With manufacturers working on various means of enabling fast charging that doesn't reduce an EV battery's total lifespan, innovations in transistor technology could provide them with the breakthrough they need to finally…
