New Volkswagen Battery Could Double Current EV Range

A battery company seeks to become the world’s first manufacturer of batteries for electric cars with a maximum range of up to 1,000 kilometers, approximately twice today’s standard. Gotion High Tech, a Volkswagen supplier with headquarters in China, revealed the new Astroinno L600 LMFP battery during the company’s yearly technology summit and stated that it will begin major production in 2024.

The LMFP battery, according to the manufacturer, has 4,000 charging and discharging cycles, which makes it ideal for use in regular electric automobiles. It has already completed all required safety testing. With a single charge, this battery can travel 1,000 miles, giving it a 4,000,000 km lifespan range, which is much longer than the typical lifespan of an automobile.

The battery’s range on a single charge is also comparable to records achieved by specially designed electrical prototypes, including the Vision EQXX by Mercedes-Benz, which in 2022 set a new record for the longest nonstop drive from Germany to the United Kingdom. It required 10 years of internal study to enable the technology’s commercial feasibility by utilizing modern technology and new electrolyte additions to solve prior problems with this sort of battery.

Just recently, prior materials for LMFP proved too bulky and not efficient enough to be used in electric vehicles due to lack of conductivity, low density compacting, and manganese dissolving at elevated temperatures. A novel LMFP electrolyte has been created by the Gotion High-Tech Research Organization in Cleveland, Ohio, which has significantly enhanced storage and cycle performance at elevated temperatures. The company has created this new Astroinno L600 battery by effectively employing its own LMFP electrolytes and components.

Even with these challenges, research experts and industry observers are interested in the technology because of its great potential.

Dr. Cheng Qian, executive director of the global business division of Gotion High-Tech, claims that the technology of lithium iron phosphate has lately gained international interest and that its share of the market continues to grow. As a result of constraints in the energy density of LFP batteries being produced in bulk, upgrading the chemical system was necessary for future progress, he added.

Further progress in designing the batteries by the company has resulted in batteries that weigh about three-thirds less and have 45% fewer structural components. Thanks to the creative design, the battery pack wiring has also been reduced from 303 meters to just 80 meters.

Although Gotion High Tech is preparing to build a battery manufacturing plant worth $2.3 billion in the United States, it is unclear which automobiles the battery will be used in first.

As other companies such as QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) are also investing in developing superior batteries for electric vehicles, future EVs could have such advanced batteries that today’s versions may seem like Stone Age relics.
