Although the electric vehicle (“EV”) industry is relatively new, it is poised to take over our roads in the not-so-distant future. Several countries have pledged to ban the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles over the next couple of decades, with European countries such as Norway and the Netherlands announcing the most ambitious plans. However, EV adoption is still far from universal, with drivers stating that high costs and uncertainty about charging and range prevent them from switching to EVs.
However, thanks to a new charging standard developed by SAE International, previously the Society of Automotive Engineers, owning an electric vehicle is about to get a lot more convenient. The U.S.-based, globally active association brought together a large group of automakers and suppliers to develop a wireless universal charging system designed to make charging EVs easier and more affordable. Dubbed SAE J2954, this wireless power transfer (WPT) will allow drivers to charge their electric vehicles without ever having to plug the car into a wall.
SAE International, a global association of more than 130,000 engineers and technical experts in the commercial vehicle, automotive and aerospace industries, has been focusing on the wireless charging standard for more than a decade. The SAE J2954 Wireless Power Transfer and Alignment Taskforce has been tirelessly working to refine the technology since 2007, long before EVs were on the roads and wireless charging was in the mainstream consciousness.
SAE International engineers conducted the decade-long project in partnership with regulatory bodies, government agencies, automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and industry groups such as the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). These efforts resulted in a wireless power transfer system that delivers up to 11 kilowatts of power at a maximum voltage up to 10 inches of space between the floor-mounted charging pad, which is connected to the grid, and the receiver on the underside of the vehicle.
Compared to wired charging connections, the WPT system charges at 94% efficiency. The SAE is working on even higher power levels to cater to passenger vehicles and heavy-duty machinery used in industries such as construction and mining. Once a WPT system is installed at a home, office, or a commercial charging station, all users have to do is park over the floor-mounted charging pad and walk away.
SAE International is looking toward a future where an EV from any automaker will be able to charge on a pad developed by any supplier at any commercial charging system. Such a system would make charging more convenient for drivers and would eliminate a significant barrier to EV adoption, which would, in turn, ease the transition from ICE vehicles to zero-emission electric vehicles.
Such developments are likely to be beneficial to electric vehicle sector players, such as ev Transportation Services Inc., which would like its products to reach the vast majority of vehicle owners across the globe.
