New EV Using Solar Can Go for 40 Miles Every Day

California-based electric vehicle startup Aptera has unveiled a solar-powered battery electric vehicle (BEV) that can travel 40 miles per day using solar energy alone and is 50% more efficient than electric vehicle giant Tesla. Aptera first hit the news with prototypes that featured a 3-wheel design and incorporated solar panels to supplement the onboard batteries.

The recently-revealed Aptera Launch Edition EV has 400 miles of range and can use solar energy to provide an extra 40 miles of range per day, providing drivers who have short commutes with a vehicle that could theoretically go for weeks without having to be plugged in. Aptera Motors unveiled the production-ready electric car at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Like the crowd-funded pre-production company’s previous prototypes, the Aptera Launch Edition features a streamlined, aerodynamic shape that helps it reduce drag and increase efficiency, allowing it to travel up to 400 miles on a single charge with the extra solar-powered 40 miles bringing the EV’s total range to 440 miles.

Four photovoltaic solar panels placed on the hatch, roof, dash, and hood provide the EV with an extra 40 miles of juice per day. Aptera built the vehicle’s structure using a carbon fiber sheet molding compound (CF-SMC) which combines chopped carbon fibers with a thermosetting resin in a composite material.

According to Aptera representatives, the composite material used to construct the Aptera Launch Edition’s structure makes building each car significantly less complex by reducing the total amount of parts required to assemble a single vehicle. The chassis comprises just 6 key components and the overall design requires just one-tenth of the parts used in traditional vehicle designs. As a result, the Aptera Launch Edition weighs less than the average electric car, has 50% less aerodynamic resistance, and is more energy efficient.

Aptera’s 440-mile electric car has a 100Watt-hours per mile (Wh/mile) energy efficiency rate compared to the Tesla Model S which has a rating of 194 Wh/mile in mild weather in the city and 288 Wh/mile in mild weather on the highway. Additionally, its 440-mile range makes the Aptera Launch Edition one of the longest-range electric cars in production, surpassing the Mercedes-Benz EQS which has a max range of 425 miles, and the Lucid Air Grand Touring which has 400 miles of range.

Despite its unconventional design, the Aptera EV may represent the future of electric vehicles. Its aerodynamically optimized design makes it highly efficient while reducing the number of parts needed to build the vehicle. The EV’s small size makes it perfect for city dwellings and its massive range, particularly the extra 40 miles gained every day via solar panels, would allow drivers to go for long periods without the need for charging.

Aptera hasn’t revealed when it is set to begin producing the EV, but the startup is gearing up for mass production and has already signed a deal with LG to secure a supply of battery cells over the next 6 years.

Competition within the EV industry is going a notch higher and existing players in the industry, such as Life Electric Vehicles Holdings Inc. (OTC: LFEV), will have to be at their best at all times in order to strengthen their penetration of the market.
