Israeli Company Installs EV Fast Chargers in US, Europe

With electric vehicles poised to take over vehicular transport over the next couple of decades, automakers and battery makers have invested considerable resources to make the transition to EVs as easy as possible. While the average electric car produces minimal to no emissions at the tailpipe, making them perfect for countries keen on cutting carbon emissions from transportation, they still aren’t as convenient to use as conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

Charging infrastructure is far from perfect in the United States, for example, with most public charging stations being concentrated in urbanized areas. Furthermore, the chargers don’t work 100% of the time and, unlike the super-fast chargers, can take up to an hour to recharge an electric vehicle. For drivers who have become accustomed to pulling into one of the hundreds of thousands of gas stations and filling up in only a couple of minutes, these charging issues are more than enough to prevent them from switching to EVs.

An Israeli company has developed fast-charging technology that could entice these drivers to finally ditch their ICE cars for zero-emission electric vehicles. Aimed at serving areas that have poor electrical grid provision, the charging technology is based on kinetic flywheel technology that would allow EV owners to charge their EVs in only 15 minutes, which is nearly as fast as the superchargers deployed by American automaker Tesla to service its customers.

The technology was developed by Zooz Power and will be deployed in Israel, the United States and Europe, with a focus on regions that don’t have equitable access to electricity. The fast-charging technology leverages flywheel technology, using electricity from the grid to spin eight steel units per unit of electricity for a total of 17,000 rotations over 60 seconds. These rotations convert the electrical energy into kinetic energy, with the rotation being slowed to turn the energy back into electrical energy when a vehicle comes to recharge.

This directs electrical energy into the EV battery with such a high intensity that it can fill up in only 15 minutes after being plugged in. According to Zooz Power CEO Boaz Weizer, the charging system is akin to a powerful toilet flush that releases a ton of water quickly. The Israeli company was able to circumvent environmental issues such s lithium extraction-associated environmental pollution and significant water use by leveraging physics (the spinning wheels) rather than chemistry.

Zooz will deploy the technology to areas whose electricity grids still aren’t powerful enough to support fast charging, starting with five leisure and commercial locations in Germany with funding from a German investment company. Zooz will install its first Israeli fast-charging station at Segula, Petah Tikva in cooperation with Afcon Electric Transportation and Dor Alon.

As such advanced battery-charging technologies are deployed alongside the telematics systems created by manufacturers such as Workhorse Group Inc. (NASDAQ: WKHS), motorists will be the net beneficiaries since their concerns will be addressed in a way that saves money in the long term.
