Is It Safe to Recharge Your EV While It’s Raining?

The switch to electric vehicles (“EVs”) is not only good for the environment but also beneficial to the owner. A recent study by JD Power revealed that first-time buyers were satisfied with their ownership experiences. This is because in comparison to internal combustion engine (“ICE”) cars, electric vehicles are energy efficient and smoother to run.

Moreover, fueling their vehicles is cheaper because they use electricity to charge their batteries.  As a result, more EV owners are investing in home charging options because of the convenience. According to research firm Juniper Research, electric car owners spent $3.4 billion on home charging units in 2021. This number is expected to rise to reach $16 billion in 2024.

Despite the switch to EVs and investment in home charging, first-time drivers still have questions about the EV experience. One of the more common questions is whether it is safe to charge an electric vehicle in the rain. The answer is yes, it is perfectly safe.

A few years back, a picture of a flooded Tesla charging station went rounds on social media before becoming a meme. According to Cleantechnica, engineers of the station might have considered such weather incidents when installing the charger. They might have set up protective measures so that the charger shuts itself off when water causes a short circuit.

In addition, the design of an electric vehicle takes into consideration that water conducts electricity and can lead to short circuits, and every EV sold in the United States has been designed for drivers to operate in a variety of weather conditions. This not only includes wet or dry circumstances but also dusty or clean, hot or cold, and even oily or dry.

In an interview, Jonathon Ratliff, the senior manager for zero emission technology development at Nissan North America, stated that it was safe to charge vehicles in any weather condition. This is because electric vehicles are engineered to function despite intrusion from water as well as dust particles that have the potential to destroy an electrical system. For example, the electrical system of the Nissan LEAF is considered to be one of the safest while plunging any part of the vehicle in water at a depth of a meter for half an hour. This rating means that you can plug an EV into a charging station in the rain.

Another reason why it’s safe to charge during the rain is that federal regulations mandate carmakers to ensure that the consumer products comply with safety requirements. This requirement is featured on the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (“CPSC”) website and comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) in 2017.

As you can see, there is no need to worry about charging a Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ: KNDI) EV or any other model from other manufacturers should a bout of rain start pouring just when you need to juice up your vehicle.
