A study conducted by the German automobile club Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) has found that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are more resistant to breaking down compared to similarly aged internal combustion engine (ICE) cars. The ADAC study found that gas-powered vehicles typically suffer two and a half times more breakdowns than EVs, suggesting that electric cars are more reliable than traditional vehicles over the long term.
ADAC maintains a database containing records of all the vehicle breakdowns handled by the association’s “Yellow Angel” service responders. This database has expanded significantly year after year, allowing for an in-depth analysis of breakdown trends in both electric and gas-powered cars, and enabling reliable comparisons between the two.
According to ADAC’s report, its Yellow Angels responded to 3.6 million breakdowns in 2024, representing a 97% increase in service calls. The number of electric vehicle breakdowns also rose in 2024, by 46%, driven by the growth of Germany’s EV market. Like many other EU member states, Germany is transitioning from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles in an effort to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
As EV adoption increases in the country, the number of EV-related breakdowns has risen. However, the increase still pales in comparison to the number of breakdowns experienced by owners of conventional vehicles. The ADAC limited its comparison to vehicles of the same age in order to prevent age-related wear and tear from skewing the results.
The automobile trade organization narrowed its sample to cars between four and six years old and found that the 2024 breakdown data offered the clearest confirmation of the reliability gap between EVs and ICE vehicles. The research ultimately showed that internal combustion engine cars experience two and a half times as many breakdowns as EVs.
This translates to 9.4 breakdowns per 1,000 ICE vehicles compared to just 3.8 breakdowns per 1,000 electric vehicles. After analyzing 159 vehicle models, the ADAC found that the Tesla Model 3 performed best among two-year-old electric cars, with only 0.5 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles, making Tesla’s best-selling EV one of the most reliable electric cars on the market.
Conversely, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was the least reliable EV in the two-year-old category, with 22.4 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles. According to ADAC’s research, most of the Ioniq 5’s issues were caused by its integrated control unit (ICCU). The ADAC study reinforces the growing consensus that EVs are not only cleaner but also more dependable, highlighting their potential to replace traditional vehicles as the preferred choice for reliability.
This report provides a vote of confidence in the strides that various EV industry actors like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) have taken since the early days of electric vehicle production that were characterized by performance issues and now their products exude quality and reliability.
