You’re probably going to see an increasing number of electric vehicles (“EVs”) on the roads in the next couple of years. Looking to halt the effects of more than a century of industrialization and greenhouse gas emissions, several countries have pledged to electrify their roads over the coming decades. In the meantime, plenty of automakers have taken to electrification with a passion, developing all kinds of electric passenger cars, pickup trucks, buses, vans and even motorcycles. Now, a company that had made its name manufacturing electric scooters, has unveiled an offering that may significantly increase its market reach: a small two-seater electric vehicle.
The 2.33-meter long vehicle features a minimalistic design capable of fitting two passengers via offset seating. The offset seats also allow part of the vehicle’s rear, right next to the back passenger, to be used as cargo storage, and according to the company, the minimal EVs are small enough for two of them to fit in a single parking spot.
Silence will develop two versions of its S04 electric vehicles, an L6e version and an L7e version. The L6e version will be equipped with a 6 kW motor with a high speed of 28 mph (45 km/h) and can be driven by drivers with a simple AM moped license. The L7e is the higher-performance version, coming with a larger 14 kW motor with a top speed of 56 mph (90 km/h). Drivers will need a standard driver’s license to operate the L7e compared to the L6e version that can be driven by anyone with a simple AM moped license.
Additionally, Silence is the first EV maker to equip its electric vehicles with removable, trolley-style wheeled batteries. The high-power version of the S04 electric will have an 11.2 kWh battery while the lower-power version will be equipped with a smaller 5.6 kWh battery. Silence’s new diminutive EVs have an estimated range of 92 miles (149 km) on the WMTC standard, the Spanish company says.
Silence plans on using battery-swapping infrastructure alongside the S04, allowing drivers to buy the EV without the battery then enroll in a battery-swapping program for just €7,500 ($8,708) per month. The company will install battery-swap stations in Barcelona for a battery-swapping pilot to test the feasibility of the program.
While the Silence S04 EV will start selling at €7,500 ($8,730), the firm has not indicated when it will officially launch the EV.
As Silence looks to popularize small EVs, other companies are targeting the heavy-commercial vehicle segment. These concerted efforts are likely to deepen electric mobility in all segments of vehicular transport.
