Colorado Start-up Plans to Shake Up EV Batteries Status

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) are poised to replace internal combustion-engined vehicles over the next few decades. Powered by rechargeable electric batteries, EVs produce zero emissions at the tailpipe and are relatively cheaper to run and maintain over the long run. However, they are still a long way from widespread adoption, a fact that could be attributed to high upfront costs as well as worries about range. A recent survey found that most U.S. consumers are held back by price and the fear of running out of juice between charging stations.

According to Doug Campbell, co-founder, and CEO of Solid Power, an industry-leading developer of next-generation, all-solid-state batteries (“ASSBs”), these concerns may soon be a thing of the past thanks to the firm’s innovative battery technology. Campbell and his company have been working for the last eight years on a new kind of battery for electric vehicles. Traditionally, EVs are powered by “wet” lithium-ion batteries that use a liquid electrolyte to ferry charged ions from the cathode to the anode. While the liquid electrolyte makes it practical to charge, it can freeze in subzero temperatures and combust when it is overloaded.

Solid Power has developed a “solid: battery that uses a sulfide-based ceramic instead of a liquid electrolyte to transfer energy. Two professors of mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder — Se-Hee Lee and Conrad Stoldt — demonstrated how viable the technology could be, resulting in the formation of Solid Power in 2014. The firm’s ten-layer ASSB has an energy density of 330Wh/kg, and Solid Power intends on raising that density to more than 430Wh/kg while keeping the battery’s mass low by the year 2022.

Solid Power’s all solid-state design can be produced on industry-standard, lithium-ion equipment using scalable processes, says Campbell. As such, Solid Powerrecently announced that it has already begun producing 20Ah 22 layer solid-state lithium metal batteries with a higher energy density than any li-ion battery currently on the market. Solid Power, which has partnerships with BMW and Ford and is backed by Samsung, Ford, Volta Energy Technologies, Hyundai and Solvay, has already shipped more than 400 solid-state cell prototypes to external parties for independent performance validation.

Solid Power has also reported great results regarding its latest electrode compositions, with one of the battery cells in research and development charging from empty to 50% in only 15 minutes and operating in temperatures as low as -10 °C, a feat wet lithium-ion batteries would never be able to achieve. Due to what is sure to be a taxing qualification process, Campbell believes the earliest we will see Solid Power’s all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries in vehicles will be 2025.

For now, the EV industry is thriving while riding on the available battery technology. For example, a company such as ev Transportation Services Inc., which makes light-duty commercial electric vehicles, is targeting customers in the security and building maintenance space, as well as urban delivery firms as users of the vehicles it makes.
