Analysis Shows ICE Vehicles Are Many Times More Wasteful than EVs

In a bid to arrest carbon emissions and reduce their impact on the environment, several countries around the world have pledged to phase out conventional gas-powered cars for electric vehicles (“EVs”) over the next few decades. Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs instead of an internal combustion engine, EVs produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, making them the perfect vehicle for the eco-friendly driver. All indications are that EVs are a much cleaner and sustainable transport option compared to burning fossil fuels, despite the technology’s relatively young age.

In fact, a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E), a Brussels-based campaign group, has found that internal combustion engine (“ICE”) vehicles are hundreds of times more wasteful than battery electric vehicles (“BEV”). Compared to the 30kg of waste material that is wasted over the lifetime of an EV lithium-ion battery pack, taking recycling into account, a gas-powered vehicle burns around 17,000 liters of oil, the T&E report says. Researchers crunched the numbers and found that an average internal combustion engine burns 300 times more material than the waste generated once an EV battery reaches the end of its lifetime.

However, the study did not consider the potential carbon emissions caused by burning fossil fuels to generate the electricity used to power EVs. Although previous studies have found that EVs emit 64% less carbon dioxide in all stages of production, the argument that manufacturing them consumes a lot of raw materials remains. According to T&E transport analyst and one of the report’s authors Lucien Mathieu, analysis shows that the raw materials needed to produce EV batteries can barely compare to the fossil fuels an ICE vehicle burns.

And unlike electric vehicle batteries, fossil fuel vehicles and their fuel cannot be recycled. The researchers did not include data about the fossil fuels used to generate the electricity that powers electric vehicles as it is dependent on several factors, including efficiency in fuel extraction and national electricity mixes. The analysis did find that manufacturing solar panels and turbines to produce electricity for EVs would increase energy consumption by only 5 to 10%.

Additionally, the T&E report states that across energy efficiency, cost and raw material demand, petrol and diesel cars are inferior to battery electric vehicles. BEVs are also far superior when it comes to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. Replacing gas-powered vehicles with electric vehicles will have environmental costs, the report notes, but the continued extraction and use of oil will have a much greater impact on the environment.

The benefits of electric vehicles take on added importance when considering that the light-duty commercial automobile made by ev Transportation Services Inc. is designed to be agile and its battery lasts longer than is the norm before a recharge is warranted. All these attributes magnify the eco-friendliness of this vehicle.
