Car dealers across the United States are reporting a notable decline in secondhand electric vehicle sales. With the electric vehicle industry now older than a decade, the market is seeing an influx of used EVs from early adopters trading in their cars for modern EVs or returning to internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.
The secondhand market was expected to help accelerate electric vehicle adoption as it would offer EVs at more affordable prices. Drivers interested in transitioning to electric cars would be able to make the switch without breaking the bank. However, recent sales data shows that consumer demand in the used EV market is dipping. Despite used EV prices declining by more than one-third this year, drivers simply aren’t as interested in buying used electric cars as the industry expected they would be.
One of the reasons behind the drop in used EV demand is uncertainty about the performance of used electric cars. While drivers can use decades of data to gauge how a used ICE car will perform, the global electric vehicle barely has any historical data for prospective drivers to draw upon. We don’t have any data on how 10-year-old electric cars and their batteries will fare in 10 or 15 years, making a secondhand electric car a risky purchase.
The rapid advancement of electric vehicle technology is also making older models seem more obsolete by the day. As EV makers are constantly working to perfect EV technology, every new generation of electric cars is packed with new and innovative features. Rather than purchase outdated EVs with outdated technology and features, many prospective EV buyers would rather wait for next-gen electric cars.
With newer models entering the secondhand market every year, older electric cars from the previous decade are much less likely to find buyers. Reservations about poor quality may also be preventing some drivers from purchasing used electric cars. Tesla, the most dominant electric vehicle brand on the globe, is somewhat famous for reliability issues and has recalled millions of vehicles. Consequently, some consumers may not be willing to buy used EVs from such brands.
The lack of reliable charging infrastructure in the United States could also be contributing to the reduction in used EV sales. Without a reliable network of public-charging stations to rely on, EV drivers typically do most of their charging at home. A cost-conscious driver looking for a used car would likely prefer a secondhand, gas-powered car that can be refueled anywhere without any additional costs.
The challenges are multifaceted, and they will require the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, including automakers such as ElectraMeccanica Vehicles Corp. Ltd. (SOLO), to find viable remedies so that the transition to EVs isn’t unduly slowed down.
