Refueling a combustion engine car has been a fairly routine process for decades: drive to a gas station, refill the car, make a quick visit to the convenience store (if there’s one present) and drive away. In and out within a couple of minutes. On the other hand, electric vehicles (“EVs”) can take hours to fully recharge, with the fastest chargers adding 60 to 200 miles of range in around about a half hour. This makes for a completely different experience as drivers usually have to find something to do while their cars fill up.
One of the largest elective vehicle charging providers in America is reintroducing a classic trend to EV charging. Back in the 1950s, waiters and waitresses, called carhops, would deliver food to people right in their cars at drive-in restaurants. Carhop dining eventually lost popularity by the 1960s, but Electrify America wants to offer this service at its new California charging stations. Since shopping malls are ideal locations to install fast chargers, Electrify America will offer carhop dining at its new charging stations at the Westfield Valley Fair shopping center.
The charging station currently has 14 ultra-fast chargers with 150–350 kW of power output as well as solar canopies. The canopies kill two birds with one stone as they provide shade for customers and charge a stationary-power storage system. This system helps to reduce the strain on local electricity grids by storing electricity when demand is low and feeding it back into the grid when demand for power peaks. Drivers will be able to order meals from mall restaurants and have the food delivered to their cars, saving them the hassle of going to a restaurant and also providing them with something to do while their EVs charge.
By the end of 2022, Electrify America plans on opening more charging stations at 17 locations provided by international shopping mall operator Westfield across 17 states. Anthony Lambkin, senior director of Operations at Electrify America, says the Westfield Valley Fair charging station features the company’s largest charging and solar canopy technology offerings and represents its next step toward providing seamless and innovative electric vehicle charging experiences and minimizing the strain EV charging causes on the grid.
As of November 2020, the Virginia-based EV charging provider had more than 500 charging stations an estimated 2,200 individual chargers. Over the next decade, Electrify America plans on investing $2 billion in zero emission vehicle (“ZEV”) infrastructure, access and education programs in the United States.
As innovations such as food delivery to EV charging points emerge, the efforts of manufacturers such as Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) will converge with the contributions being made by other actors intent on easing the switch to electric mobility.
